About surfing in Morocco

Morocco's central Atlantic coast is the warmest reliable surf destination in striking distance of Europe. The hub is Taghazout, a small fishing village turned surf town 30 minutes north of Agadir, where a string of right-hand point breaks — Anchor Point, Killer Point, Boilers, Mysteries — line up against NW Atlantic swells. Water sits between 17°C in winter and 22°C in late summer, prevailing winds are easterly (offshore), and the surf season runs from October through April with peak swell typically in December and January. Essaouira to the north is windier and better known for kitesurfing, while Sidi Ifni to the south offers quieter alternatives when Taghazout gets crowded.

Getting there

Most travellers book a surf-camp package — accommodation, board rental, daily transport to whichever break is working, and usually meals. Taghazout is the main base. A rental car is helpful if you want to chase spots independently or visit Imsouane and Sidi Ifni.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to surf Morocco?
December through February is peak season — biggest, cleanest NW Atlantic swells and reliable offshore E winds. Shoulder months (October-November and March-April) are warmer with smaller, more beginner-friendly waves.
Which airport should I fly into?
Agadir (AGA) is the closest, around 30 minutes from Taghazout. Marrakech (RAK) is roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by car or shuttle but typically has more European budget flights.
Do I need a wetsuit?
Yes, even though the water is warm by European standards. A 3/2 is standard year-round; January-February you might want a 4/3 for early sessions.
Is Morocco good for beginners?
Yes — Taghazout, Tamraght and Imsouane all have schools, gentle beach breaks, and surf camps that handle airport transfer, accommodation and lessons as a package.
Do I need a visa?
EU and UK citizens get 90 days visa-free on arrival. Bring a passport with at least six months of validity.
