About surfing in Portugal North

Northern and central Portugal is the densest concentration of quality surf in Europe. Within an hour and a half of Lisbon you can be in Ericeira, a designated World Surfing Reserve with seven core breaks; another hour north sits Peniche with Supertubos, one of the most powerful beach breaks on the continent; and beyond that lies Nazaré, famous for winter big-wave canyons. The whole stretch is exposed to W and NW Atlantic swell, prevailing summer winds are northerly (offshore on most spots), and water temperatures sit between 13°C in winter and 19°C in late summer. Swell is reliable from September through April with occasional summer pulses.

Getting there

A car is recommended — public transport links Lisbon to Ericeira and Peniche but doesn't cover the smaller breaks. Ericeira and Peniche both have abundant surf camps and shaper stores. Lisbon itself works as a base if you don't mind the daily drive.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to surf central Portugal?
September to April delivers the most consistent NW Atlantic swells. October and November are often the sweet spot — solid surf, lighter crowds, water still around 17-18°C.
Which airport should I fly into?
Lisbon (LIS) is the main hub: Ericeira is 45 minutes by car, Peniche about 90 minutes. Porto (OPO) is closer if you're heading to Espinho or the north coast.
Do I need a wetsuit?
Almost always. A 3/2 covers June through September. From October onwards a 4/3 is standard, and February-March can get cold enough that some surfers use a hood, though most go without.
Is it good for beginners?
Yes — Baleal near Peniche has wide, gentle sandbars on the sheltered side and is the main learning beach in central Portugal. Ericeira's Foz do Lizandro and Praia do Sul also work well on smaller days.
How crowded does it get?
Ericeira's main breaks (Ribeira d'Ilhas, Coxos) get busy year-round. Peniche is calmer outside summer. Drive ten minutes from any famous spot and the lineups thin out fast.
