About surfing in West Sardinia

Western Sardinia is the closest the Mediterranean gets to Atlantic-style surf. The Mistral — a strong N to NW wind that funnels down from the Gulf of Lyon — generates consistent W and NW swells across the Sardinian Sea, hitting an exposed coast lined with reefs, points and quality beach breaks. The hub is Capo Mannu and the surrounding Sinis peninsula north of Oristano, home to Sardinia's premier wave. Water sits between 14°C in late winter and 25°C in late summer; offshore wind is E or NE on most spots. The surf season runs October through April, with the best classic days arriving in the shoulder months when the Mistral is strong but air temperatures are still pleasant.

Getting there

A car is essential — the surf coast is rural and spots are scattered along 20km of peninsula. San Vero Milis and Putzu Idu are the most convenient bases. A few small surf camps and rental shops operate seasonally in Capo Mannu.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to surf Sardinia?
October-November and March-April. Mistral swells are at their most consistent in winter, but those shoulder months balance reliable surf with sunny, mild weather and warmer water.
Which airport should I fly into?
Alghero (AHO) is the closest to Capo Mannu (~90 minutes south). Cagliari (CAG) covers the southern half of the island and is two hours from the Sinis peninsula.
What wetsuit do I need?
3/2 from May to early November. From December to March a 4/3 keeps you comfortable; the cold Mistral wind makes the air colder than the water.
Is Sardinia good for beginners?
The reef-and-point setup near Capo Mannu is intermediate-and-up. Beginners are better off at sandy beach breaks like Putzu Idu and Sa Mesa Longa when conditions are small.
How crowded is it?
Far less crowded than the European Atlantic coast. The local scene is small and friendly. Capo Mannu can fill up on the best days but there's space to spread out along the peninsula.
